Strengths and Weaknesses of Solid Wood Flooring

Like all materials, there are strengths and weaknesses to installing solid wood flooring. On the plus side, wood is easier to clean and essential flooring for anyone with asthmatic conditions or dust allergies. Unlike carpet, wooden floors do not trap fibres, dust and pollutants.

At the moment, solid wood flooring is highly sought after in properties, so installation will definitely increase the value of your home. Adding wood into your home can compliment your soft furnishings with its clean smooth finish. Oak is one of the materials that we use the most, and it can be finished in a variety of ways to bring warmth and colour into your home.

On the other hand, solid wood floors can be scratched and damaged by water. So, take this into account before making your choice. As an organic project, over a very long time, solid wood floors can develop warp.

Also, when an old floor is taken up to be replaced, we can find problems under the floor that can add to the cost of a project. These problems can be unexpected, so please be aware that there may be additional costs to your project.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Parquet Flooring

Parquet flooring refers to wooden floors that are made up of geometric designs. Small strips of wood are laid out in a pattern, normally using variations of chevrons, triangles and arrows. The result, once finished, is stunning, unique and brings a feeling of warmth to any home.

Like solid wood flooring, parquet is easy to clean and doesn’t trap allergens or pollutants making it an ideal flooring for those with allergies. It is easy to repair and can be oiled, varnished or lacquered in a variety of ways to bring different colours into your home.

It is also more durable and hardwearing than solid wooden floors. This is because of the layers of wood used to form the parquet, movement in the wood is reduced meaning there is less warp over time.

Again, just like solid wood, parquet flooring is prone to scratches and can be damaged easily by water. Unexpected costs can arise during installation if there is damage under existing flooring.

Things to think about when adding decking to your garden.

Decking is an excellent way of adding a usable living space to your home and garden. There are somethings you need to think about before adding decking to your garden.

Consider the size and location of your decking area. A deck that is disproportionately too large for your garden can decrease the value of your home. Conversely, too small a deck means its usability is limited as you won’t have much space.

Similarly, think about what you’re going to use your deck for. Where does the sun hit your garden? Right outside your patio doors might not be the best location for a sun deck if your garden is north facing. However, some people prefer more shade if they want to use their decking as an area to socialise during the summer.

Flooring and decking that suits you.

However, taking all these strengths and weaknesses of the different types of flooring and decking into account, there is no doubt that wooden flooring of any type brings a level of finish and quality into your home. It is perfect for pets, easy to clean and more durable than carpet. So, for your flooring and decking needs, contact us for a no obligation quote.
